Half-Jap Youth Must Stand Trial

United States District Judge John C. Bowen today set October 6 for the trial of 18-year-old James Sugiura, half Japanese and half Caucasian, for violation of the evacuation order governing Japanese in the coastal area.

Suguira's bail was set at $100. The court ruled he can be released from the King County jail only if he posts the bail and goes directly to the Japanese evacuation center at Camp Harmony, Puyallup.

Sugiura pleaded not guilty. Since his mother is a Caucasian, he said, he did not know he was violating the law by remaining in Seattle.
