RACE WAR STARTS IN THE SUMMIT KITCHEN

Japanese Dishwasher Has Trouble With Chinese Cooks and Countrymen Rally to His Aid.

Because a Japanese employe called Sam disagreed with the Chinese kitchen employes of the Summit on Sunday, all the Chinese and Japanese employes of the hotel were involved in a fight in which knives, dishes and kitchen utensils were used freely as weapons. The Chinese routed the Japanese and in the melee the Japs suffered the worse cuts and bruises. At least one Jap had to submit to surgical treatment after the fight, Dr. Shannon taking several stitches in a cut on his head.

Chinese are employed almost exclusively in the kitchen and Japanese elsewhere in the hotel. Sam was sent into the kitchen to wash the dishes and quarreled with the Chinese cooks and kitchen help over his duties. A fight started and Sam called loudly for help.

Immediately the Japanese in the house rallied to the support of their countryman.

The Japanese were regarded as the aggressors and largely responsible for the bad feeling that developed into the Sunday fight. They have been dismissed and a new Japanese crew is on duty. The Chinese victors are in full possession of the kitchen without a change in the personnel of the working force.
