Legion to Keep Sponsorship Of Nisei Scouts

Despite the war, Seattle Post No. 1, American Legion, will hold fast to its program of teaching the ideals of Americanism through continued sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop No. 59, composed entirely of Nisei, American-born boys of Japanese ancestry, it was decided at a post meeting last night.

The meeting, held at the Elks Lodge, Fourth Avenue and Spring Street, drew an attendance of 150, including some 30 present and former members of Troop No. 59. Seattle Post No. 1 has sponsored the troop the past 14 years, with post members, serving as troop committeemen, providing its supervision. Harry Blackbourn is troop chairman.

T. Byron Hunt, Scout executive for the Seattle are, praised the Legion post for its determination to continue with its sponsorship of the unusual troop which, according to Scout leaders, has maintained an outstanding record for interest and efficiency. The troop meets at the Bailey Gatzert School, attended largely by children of diverse racial ancestries.
