Broadway High Japanese Wins Speech Contest

Speaking on "The Young American Citizen and His Flag," Yukio Ozaki, Broadway High School student, last night won an oratory contest sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the Japanese-American Citizens' League at the Japanese Buddhist Church.

Ozaki won a cup and the right to represent the Seattle Chapter at the Pacific Northwest district convention at Tacoma September 4.

Toyo Nishimura of Cleveland High School was awarded the second prize gold medal for her talk on "America First." Third place and a silver medal went to Akira Kikuchi of Broadway High School, who discussed "The Struggle for Good Citizenship." Shaigeo Fujita, speaking on "Preparing for Citizenship," was given honorable mention.

Judges were Mrs. George B. Jackson, public speaking teacher; City Councilman David Levine, and James A. Wood, associate editor of The Times. Jackson Sonoda was chairman and Takeo Nogaki extended greetings.

The winner at the Tacoma contest will compete in the national convention contest at Portland next September.
