Young Japanese Pianist Scores As Guest Star

By L.C.S.

A music loving audience that filled every seat of the auditorium and balcony of the First Baptist Church last evening gave generous acclaim to a 17-year-old Japanese pianist, Miss Mary Amano, the guest artist of the Treble Clef Club in its annual spring concert. Although of slender build she had exceptional power in her small hands as well as appealing delicacy of touch which showed to advantage in her two solos "Valse Chromatique" by Godard, and "Aria con Variazieni" by Mozart.

With Silvio Risegari at the second piano, Miss Amano played the first movement of "Concerto in D Minor" by Mozart and the massive "Hungarian Fantasy" by Liszt. She played entirely from memory and although her piano was so placed that she could not see the second piano, she never missed a cue nor faltered in those long difficult passages of the two classes which make such great demands upon both hands and memory as well.

Following a custom of many years the concert opened with the "Star Spangled Banner" sung by the assembly, led by the chorus under the baton of Edwin Fairbourn. It is always an inspiring preface to the programs which this fine chorus of fifty women's voices presents several times a year. Their fresh carefully trained voices were at their best last evening in a pleasing variety of numbers. Particularly are they adept in A Capella work and several of these selections featured last night's program.
