JAPANESE HAVE BIG MAT NIGHT

Higami Beats Bylund When He Takes Odd Fall; His Friend, Shima, Draws in Bout With Yaqui Joe

Tetsura Higami, colorful wrestler-showman, added a new leaf to the wrestling booklet last night when he used a combination of three different holds in the fourth round of his bout with Bobby Bylund to win in the main event on the Greater Athletic Club's weekly mat program at the Civic Arena.

Higami, after using a series of whip wristlocks, followed by several flying tackles, climaxed his campaign for victory with an aeroplane spin to win the odd fall of the contest.

Bylund gained the first fall of the bout in the opening round with a body slam and a top body hold. The colorful Higami evened the score in the third round with a double-arm lock and followed with his combination attack a round later to win the battle.

All in all, it was a big night for the Japanese wrestling fraternity, since Iota Shima succeeded in holding the clever Indian wrestler, Yaqui Joe, to a draw in the semiwindup. Both boys scored a fall, Yaqui Joe taking the first in the third round with a flying toehold and Shima following to win his fall in the fourth frame with a series of whip wristlocks.

"Silent" Condell, amiable mute, copped his third straight Seattle victory in the special event. The deaf and dumb grappler scored in successive falls over "Roughhouse" Billy Coggins of Tacoma.

Bobby Roscoe and Bobby Samson, welterweights, wrestled to a three-round no-fall draw in the opener.

Members of the Seattle and Hollywood baseball teams, in addition to the Rikkio University squad of Japan, attended the show as guests of the Greater Athletic Club management.
