BALLARD TAKES SLUGGING GAME, NIPPON BEATEN

Gaffney Leads Madrona to Victory Over University; Gaw Closed Season With .500 Average

Potting the Queen Anne tossers to a 7-to-2 lead in the third inning, Ballard piled up enough runs in the next four frames to stand up under a late rally by the Hilltoppers and win, 13 to 12. The game was one of three closing Community League contests.

Johnny Gaffney, with a pair of triples and a single in four attempts, led Madrona to a 12-to-5 victory over University. Wilson Gaw hit two out of four to finish the season with a .500 batting average. George Hurley and Rumpy Seymour also did well with the stick for the Madacs.

Greenwood-Phinney pulled an upset over the Nippon A.C. nine, winning 12 to 5. Clarence Pautzke and Heinie Bendele led the Greenwood hitters, Pautzke getting a triple and two singles and Bendele a homer. Dalzel also bagged a home run.

The four teams in the playoff will stage two of their contests at night, it was announced yesterday by Smith Wilson, president of the Community League. The games will be played at the Coast League ball park on the nights of August 12 and 14.

Next Sunday's double-header at the Civic Stadium will see the start of the playoff.
