TAIYOS CAPTURE JAPANESE GRID TITLE WITH WIN

Nippons Handed 7 to 0 Defeat; Rainiers Take Measure of South End, 6 to 0; Games Wind Up Season.

Husky Frank Sugiyama, breaking through the Nippon line and then cutting back to elude the secondary defense, yesterday accounted for the touchdown that gave the Taiyo Athletic Club a 7 to 0 victory over the Nippon A.C. at the Civic Stadium in the final Community Football League game of the season.

When little Johnny Funai, Taiyo quarterback, converted the try for point, he put the finishing touch on the win that gave the Taiyos the Japanese grid title of the city for the season.

The game was the second of the double bill that found South End losing to Rainier District, 6 to 0, in the first tussle as a result of Harry Burgh's smashing drive that ended in a touchdown when he crashed the line at the right end.

The work of Jack Kiba, Mike Iseri and Tom Takayoshi, along with Funai and Kenny Kuniyuki, featured in the Taiyo victory. The Nippon A.C. opened up a drive in the first quarter that carried it to the Taiyo 7-yard line but an incompleted pass over the goal line ended the scoring chance.

Coaches Ham Green and Claude Norris of the Nippons had a flashy, well-drilled team on the field built around Sakai Arai, Choppie Umemoto and Kelly Uno. The latter made the most consistent gains of any backfield man on either team.
