"Chinese" Boy Is of Nipponese Stock But Doesn't Know It; Adopted Early

Among the passengers arriving last evening on the American Mall liner President Jackson were Chin Ne Toy of the Yei Chong Company, Seattle, and Kenneth Chin, 12-year-old Japanese boy, adopted son of Chin Ne Toy, a Chinese. He was adopted through legal process in the Superior Court of King County. Unlike his real father or his "dad" by adoption, Kenneth is an American citizen, having been born in this country.

The boy was 6 years old when his adoption into the Chin family was consummated, and immediately after the legal process of adoption had been completed the new father took him to China, where he was placed with Mrs. Chin that his childish mind might develop under purely Chinese surroundings. He does not know that his parents by adoption are not of his own blood, nor does he speak a word of the language of his own father or mother. He is Chinese in thought, education, and ideas. His schooling, so far, as been received only in Chinese schools, the speech he has heard all during his life has been the language of China, but of Chinese blood this Chinese boy has not one single drop.

"And, while with my wife in China I have two sons and one little daughter, Kenneth to me is just as much my son as the two boys I have in China. And it is the same with my wife. When I took the little fellow back home six years ago, my wife was equally as pleased as I. She took him as one of her own. To him we are father and mother, and that is the way I hope he will always see us. I have brought him back that he may receive his education in America; he is a citizen by birth, something none of his own blood can become, and I want him to be one of the very best kinds of American citizens."
