Japanese Wins First Damage Suit in Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore., Saturday, July 24. -- The first of the five damage suits brought by Japanese against Toledo, Ore., citizens as the result of the deportation affair there a year ago was settled today in favor of T. Ogura, Japanese. A verdict gave him $2,500 damages.
Ogura had sued for $25,000, charging that a committee of prominent citizens of the mill town had violated Japanese treaty rights by forcing him to leave his home in Toledo. He also charged mistreatement at the hands of a mob. The verdict was directed against George Schenck, Toledo police chief; his wife, Rosemary Schenck; W.S. Colvin, H.T. Pritchard, Owen Hart and Frank Sturtevant, the six defendants.
The case will be appealed as soon as possible, according to Defense Attorney B.A. Green.
