SUICIDE IN A LODGING HOUSE

Japanese Cut His Throat From Ear to Ear With Two-Edged Knife.

A. Horiki was found dead in a lodging house, 308 Fourth Avenue South, at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon by an attendant of the house, who gave the alarm to the police at 4 o'clock. Detective Lane was sent down to the place and found Horiki lying upon the bed with this throat cut from ear to ear, and his body lacerated from the effects of a two-edged knife, tightly clasped in his right hand.

That the case was one of suicide deliberately planned was evident from the fact that he had divested himself of underclothing in order to give free play to the knife. Investigation by Coroner Hoye revealed the fact that he had $60 to his credit in a Japanese savings bank. The motive for the act is not known.

The prevailing opinion among the Japanese is that the act of self-destruction was committed as an atonement for a wrong done in Japan several years ago. Coroner Hoye considered the matter as one of deliberate suicide and decided to hold no inquest.
