114,879 Japanese in Hawaiian Islands

Honolulu, Wednesday, Aug. 24. -- The number of Japanese in the Hawaiian Islands during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1921, was estimated at 114,879 out of a total estimated population of 275,884, it was announced when the annual resume of vital statistics was made public by the territorial Board of Health.

The justification for Hawaii's reputation as the "melting pot of the Pacific" was evidenced in the tabulation of race populations contained in the report.

The Japanese births during the year constituted virtually one-half of the total births of the territory, or 5,001, according to figures supplied by the Japanese consul-general.

The Japanese deaths totaled slightly more than one-third of the entire deaths of the territory.

The total Japanese population of 114,879 is an increase of 5,605 over the official census of 1920.
