TWO JAPANESE CONVICTED

Charged With Conspiracy to Smuggle Aliens Into U.S.

Two Japanese of the original 12 defendants, charged with conspiracy to smuggle Japanese aliens into the United States last October 27, on the steamship Alabama Maru, were found guilty yesterday by a jury in the United States Court. They were Horakichi Saito, former quartermaster on the steamship, and Mitsuyoshi Fujiwara, ship's carpenter.

The maximum penalty under the law, the United States attorney said, is two years' imprisonment and a fine of $10,000. Sentence was deferred by Federal Judge Edward E. Cushman until next Monday.

Three other defendants found not guilty were Yomane Shotaro, Seattle restaurant proprietor; T. Yoshida, King County rancher, and S. Sakai, fireman on the Alabama Maru. Sakai was turned over to immigration authorities. Seven of the 12 defendants placed on trial were stowaways. Charges against the stowaways were dismissed Wednesday.
