JAPANESE PROTEST ON MARKET ALLOTMENTS

The harbors and public grounds committee of the city council, of which Councilman Charles Marble is chairman, today heard the protests of a number of Japanese farmers against the method of drawing spaces at the Pike Place Public Market. There are six Japanese to one American on the public market and the Japanese want drawings so that they will have allotments in proportion to the number on the market.

Some time ago, on recommendation of Commissioner of Health J.S. McBride, the council provided for the drawing of even numbers by Americans and odd numbers by Americans and odd numbers by Japanese, thus equalizing the number of each nationality on the public market. The committee declined to make any change in that rule, which has been in effect about two months.
