JAPANESE QUESTION BEFORE BUTCHERS' UNION

Whether the Japanese journeymen butchers of Seattle shall be admitted to membership in Butchers' Local Union No. 81 was a question of rather large moment discussed at some length at the weekly meeting of the local in the Labor Temple last night. The Central Labor Council went on record at its meeting last week in favor of the "organization of all workers in all crafts," in replying to a communication from the journeymen barbers' international union inquiring whether the council wished the Japanese barbers as well as the women barbers admitted to the international. The council had passed a resolution favoring the organization of the women barbers and forwarded it to the barbers' international.

The butchers are the first local union to take up the central body's suggestion for serious discussion. There are but a half dozen or so of the Japanese meat cutters and butcher workmen in Seattle and several of the speakers at the local union's meeting last night favored taking them into membership as a protective measure. Others opposed the move and the question finally went over until the next meeting of the local.

Hours Too Long.

Another important subject brought up was the hardship worked on the journeymen butchers by porprietors [proprietors] of shops in the new South End public market in keeping open until 7 p.m. The other shops of the city close at 6, except on Saturdays, when they are open until 10. The butchers go to work at 6 a.m. and those who live in distant north and suburbs and work in downtown markets are compelled to get up at 4:30 o'clock in order to reach their employment. Those who are compelled to work until 7 p.m. cannot reach home before 8 and consequently, as it was asserted in the discussion last night, get home only to sleep. The local will begin a campaign to induce all members of organized labor to "shop early" and favor the markets that close at 6.
