JAP EXCLUSION STARTS HOT FIGHT!
JOHNSON LEADER IN ACRIMONIOUS DEBATE ON EXCLUSION BILL
Backed by Californians, He Seeks to Have House Commission on Immigration Vote to Bar Asiatics.
CONFUSION FEATURES HEATED DISCUSSION
By Close Ballot, After Repeated Attempts to Get Favorable Action Question Is Temporarily Deferred.
WASHINGTON, Saturday, Dec. 13. -- Representatives Raker and Hayes of California and Johnson of Washington today sought to have the House immigration committee incorporate in the pending immigration bill an amendment for the exclusion of "Asiatics," including Hindu and Japanese.
The fight in the committee was acrimonious, and confusion in the discussion was so marked that it was reported an amendment for Asiatic exclusion had been carried.
By a close vote, however, after repeated attempts, the question of including an inhibition against Asiatics was deferred until later in the day, with the California and Washington members of the committee insisting on exclusion.
