MANY JAPS ARRESTED.
Number Smuggled In Landed Near Ballard Today.

A score or more Japanese, one report saying thirty-seven, were arrested in Ballard this morning by the Town Marshal, as they had evidently been smuggled into United States territory from British Columbia.

The foreigners had, it is understood, no papers, and Immigrant Inspector Snyder was immediately notified of their arrival. The Japs were landed in Salmon Bay and proceeded to Ballard.

United States Marshal Tyler had not been notified up to 3 o'clock of the arrest of the Japanese. He stated to a Times reporter that a number of attempts had been made recently to smuggle Japanese into the state from across the line. Before they can enter the state they have to satisfy the authorities that they have $30 in cash, and also to pass a medical examination.

Inspector Snyder brought the Japanese to the city from Ballard late this afternoon on a flat car.
