JAPANESE ATTACKED BY COLLEGE STUDENTS
Servant Knocked to Ground and Brutally Beaten on University of California Campus.
BERKELEY, Cal., Saturday, Jan. 30. -- K. Kaneko, a Japanese servant, was assaulted by a number of University of California students on the campus last evening, knocked to the ground, otherwise roughly handled and as a result the Japanese colony of this city is in a state of agitation.
Kaneko, who is a servant in the employ of Mrs. Redfield, was performing an errand for the woman and as he approached the students, seven in number, they were discussing the Japanese question. He tried to pass them and one of the students grappled with him. The little brown boy brought his native jiu jitsu into play and soon was free from the grasp of the students.
As he endeavored to escape the other six set upon him and handled him in no gentle manner.
The occurrence has been reported to the police, but as the Japanese could give no description of his assailants the police are powerless to act.
