Japanese-Americans Ordered Set Free
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 8, -- (AP) -- More than 350 Japanese-Americans, whom the government wants sent back to Japan because they renounced their citizenship during the war, were ordered freed today in Texas and New Jersey by a Federal District Judge here. The government immediately filed notices of appeal.
The 365 Japanese-Americans were the last of approximately 1,500 freed under similar circumstances. In addition, others have been deported to Japan.
Judge Louis E. Goodman, who issued today's order, had pointed out in a ruling on other such cases that even if the Japanese-Americans had renounced their citizenship they still were not Japanese.
