Hirabayashi Gets Year in Federal Camp

Gordon K. Hirabayashi, former University of Washington senior from Auburn, was found guilty of failure to report at a conscientious objector camp and was sentenced to serve one year in a federal road camp by United States District Judge Lewis B. Schwellenbach yesterday in Spokane.

The jury deliberated only 12 minutes, the Associated Press reported.

Before passing sentence, Judge Schwellenbach told the Japanese-American, husband of a Seattle Caucasian, that "if in the beginning the philosophy which you believe in, and have expounded in this courtroom, had been accepted universally, man never would have risen above a brutal beast."

The court instructed the jury that no question of religious freedom or constitutionality was involved.
