Miss Schmoe, Hirabayashi Wed in Spokane

SPOKANE, Aug. 1.--(AP)--Miss Esther Schmoe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Schmoe of Seattle, and Gordon K. Hirabayashi, Japanese-American youth who gained nation-wide attention by filing a test suit challenging government evacuation orders, were married Saturday, they disclosed today.

The father of the attractive white girl and S. Hirabayashi of Weiser, Idaho, the bridegroom's father, sat side by side as the couple stepped quietly into the Lidgerwood Evangelical Church for the first Quaker wedding to be solemnized in Spokane.

Frederick Elkington, a Seattle overseer of the University Friends Meeting, of which the bride and bridegroom are members, read the Statement of Friends. The couple made their vows and exchanged rings.

Both attended the University of Washington. Hirabayashi carried his test suit unsuccessfully to the United States Supreme Court, and last month was arrested here on a charge of failing to fill out and return a Selective Service questionnaire. He is at liberty under bond of $1,000. He will appear before a Seattle judge at an unspecified future date.

After a brief wedding trip the Hirabayashis will make their home here.
