Color Prejudice Returns To Haunt The White Races

When the Japanese captured Manila, they issued orders warning all whites in the city to stay indoors. They warned that white persons seen on the streets might be subjected to insults and possible bodily harm. At the same time, the Japanese propaganda ministry has been trying to turn the Filipinos against the United States by distributing pamphlets in which they are told the Americans consider the little brown "brothers" as inferior because they are not white.

This Japanese propaganda also tells of lynchings and jim crow laws in the States aimed against all non-whites. Thus the past sins and arrogance and intolerance of white Americans rise to plague them, and in a form that cannot be truthfully refuted.

The color prejudice that the white races fostered for so many years has had a reverse effect on the Japanese, who now insist that the entire continent of Asia is for the yellow and brown races, and that the whites must be driven out.

English and American whites taught the Japs how to draw the color line; now they are using this same color line against them.

As much as we hate appeals to racial prejudice, we cannot feel too sorry that such appeals are returning to haunt these who started them.
