PULLMAN PORTERS IN DEMONSTRATION

NEW YORK -- Saturday afternoon, the Pullman porters and their wives, children and sympathizers staged a parade and demonstration against the displacement of Pullman porters by Filipinos, Japanese and Chinese; 600 hours' work a month, furloughing of porters, and other grievances.

The demonstration was also a protest against the proposed cut in wages announced for next November.

One thousand porters have lost jobs to Filipinos, although porters have been in the Pullman service from 10 to 40 years, while the oldest Filipino in the Pullman service is just six years. The Brotherhood has nothing against the Filipinos, Japanese, and Chinese, but the union would oppose the Pullman company's using anybody to break down the rule of seniority and destroy the porters' union, says A. Philip Randolph, national president.
