Dear Frances,

Eleanor Lowry brought me the copy of Integrateducation and I'm so pleased that she did. I passed it on Earl Young to read and then we'll keep it on file here at Glenbrook North. I made several other copies, one to be saved with all other information which will be stored away in the archives from the Silver Jubilee and probably not reopened for another 25 years! I knew Ken Holmes and many of the Social Studies teachers would be especially interested in it so I made a copy for them. Micky [illegible], Louella Merl and Ellie Dedrick also expressed real interest so I made copies for them. I think you could say you were a best selling author around here!

I found the article fascinating and am so glad you took the time and effort to put your

experience on paper for it's a part of our history – a sad part, to be sure – that needs to be preserved. You did an excellent job of writing it. After seeing you on May 21st and your mentioning it, I did recall that you had taught in a relocation center but, of course, didn't know of the many interesting incidents you relate in your writing. Joyce and our three children read it – two of our kids are particularly avid readers about World War II – and we all commend you! The story about the heartbeat of the snake is a remarkable little vignette that you included. I would now like to have you return – sometime before the 50th anniversary of the school! – so we could ask you some questions about it.

You certainly look as though your life was treating you well. You really don't look as though your [sic] old enough to retire. How about that! Maybe it's the fact that you don't have to any longer do battle in the public school arena everyday that keeps you

looking so fit. I still have a way to go. I'm 54 and because our youngest – a boy – is just a high school sophomore, I plan on about 6 more years beyond this one. Joyce plans to teach that long also. But we do very much look forward to the day when we can retire. I think about it at least once a day – when I reluctantly crawl out of bed when I'd really rather sleep a little longer in the morning.

We've entertained ourselves the last 6 weeks (Joyce & I that is) taking a night school course at Glenbrook's evening school in Chicago. It has been taught by two Glenbrook South history teachers who have a special interest in the city and they have made the course really exciting because of their enthusiasm. They've covered in lectures and slide presentations everything from Chicago's history to architecture to ethnic neighborhoods to crime! On Saturday of the past weekend we rented a van and took a field trip to visit a few of the spots that had been covered in class. It was topped off by a gigantic meal at a Greek restaurant on Halstead Street. Quite enjoyable.

Again, thanks for the excellent article. It was a pleasure seeing you, if too briefly. If you are ever in the area again, we'd certainly like to have a little more time with you.

Sincerely,
Dick
