Dear Frances Haglund,
Recently Sharon Aburano[?] sent me a copy the article you prepared for Readers [sic] Digest. I think it is excellent. She did not indicate whether she had sent to you the autobiographical account of my experience with the Japanese Evacuation titled "Service with the War Relocation Authority 1942-46." If not I will be glad to send you a copy if you wish.
I am in the process of editing & revising it preparatory to having it copywrited [sic]. Several libraries with collections of material on the subject have asked for copies. In in [sic] present form it is 49, double spaced, typewritten pages plus a few photographs, copies of Military Orders, etc.
It has occurred to me that by combining your and my articles in the piece it would be more meaningful to those interested in the Evacuation experience. There are different ways this might be done.
First, by deleting from one or the other any items that duplicate, such as the physical aspects of the Center.
Second, publish, with revisions the two articles separately but within one cover under each of our names.
Third, publish it jointly by combining the two some way with a suitable title. Since mine is autobiogra- this would be difficult.
I intent to have it single rather double spaced in order to reduce bulk and cost of duplicating. I can it photocopied for 3 cents a page. I would expect my part to be about 30 pages including photos etc.
My intent, after having it copywrited [sic] is to give copies to friends, relatives & libraries. If it should be useful to someone to publish it in whole or part then I would listen to monetary offers. Could furnish you with as many copies as you would want for the 3 cents per page plus binding cover.
Would appreciate having your reaction to this proposal & whether I might use any of your material in case you did not want to publish jointly.
In closing please give dates when you first went to Minidoka, titles of your teaching positions & date of departure. I was back at Minidoka for only 2 or 3 days in the spring of 1945 in attempting to move the evacuees to their previous homes.
Sincerely,
George L. Townsend
P.S. I lived in St. Paul, Minn. 1950-65 when I retired to Sequim. I still follow with interest the weather reports in Minn. It was 33 degrees low last night here & 45 degrees in daytime here. Although 70 miles N.W. of Seattle we have only 1/3 the rainfall Seattle has. We love it here!
