Title: Memorandum regarding travel permits, (denshopd-p25-00109)
Densho ID: denshopd-p25-00109

TO: MEMORANDUM TO EVACUEES
FROM: ERNEST J. PALMER, RELOCATION OFFICER
SUBJECT: VISITS TO RELOCATION CENTER

We hope the following letter will answer any questions you might have regarding visits to the relocation centers. If it does not, we will be glad to have you contact this office personally.

After January 3, 1945 you should secure a travel permit from this office before returning to the center. If you do not secure this permit, you may not be allowed to enter the project, you will be required to pay two weeks' board and room in advance and you may forfeit any right for assistance from the WRA in returning to the coast or other points of relocation.

Visits will be allowed in the following cases:

1. Persons who have been accepted for service with the armed forces upon pre-induction physical examination for the period pending induction

2. Emergency visits because of serious illness or death in the family

3. Students at the end of a college or school term for a period not to exceed 90 days

4. Visits will be allowed if deemed necessary to complete the relocation of family members residing in the relocation center.

Before a visit will be approved in case "4" or to aid in relocation, you must have your relocation plans pretty well completed so that your visit to the center will settle the final arrangements. Let me advise you to finish your relocation plans by correspondence if at all possible so that your visit to the center will not be necessary. However, after you have made your plans as complete as possible by correspondence and if you still feel that you need to return to the center, we will be glad to consider your application for the visit.

It will be necessary for you to fill out form WRA-388 (application to visit the center to aid relocation) and then have this application approved by the project director. The day you complete form 388, it will be air-mailed to the project and if the relocation officer and the project director feel your visit is necessary, the form will be approved and mailed to you. In other words, it may take almost a week before you can secure your travel permit after you have applied for it. If you are given travel permission to visit the center, you will not need to pay board and room while there.

We are very anxious to help all of you make your relocation complete within the next few months so if we can be of service to you, let us know.
