Text:

It is the common talk among Japanese troops now under the protection of the US Forces that they were greatly hindered in making their decision to surrender by misleading Japanese propaganda to the effect that all Japanese would be tortured and killed regardless of sex. Upon surrendering, the prisoners realized that the propaganda was false and indeed an absurd story. What reeling of relief and rejoicing can be soon in their faces.

The following was voluntarily written by a BOEITAI (Conscript Labor Unit) member to relay the true picture to you who are undergoing hardships, misled by Japanese propaganda:

"I am receiving good treatment under the protection of the American Forces, I am an OKINAWA BOEITAI member and I was living in NAHA until I entered the BOEITAI last year. I had been working at YONTAN. We were wounded by the bombardment accompanying the American landings, but we were rescued by the US Forces. Prior to the landing of the US Forces, we were always told that when if the Americans should land, every last Japanese would be killed. This propaganda is entirely false. My Comrades! This OKINAWA Operation is hopeless. I believe that under such circumstances it would be better to come into the American lines one day sponsor. At present the people of OKINAWA are leading happy lives under the protection of the American Forces."

By complying with the following, persons surrendering to the US Forces have nothing to fear:

1. Dispose of all arms and ammunition.

2. Raise both hands high above the head, come out waving either a white cloth or this sheet of paper.

3. Select open spaces. Do this without hesitation alone or no more than groups of three.

4. Never approach US lines during the hours of darkness.

5. Any hour during daylight is suitable but the most appropriate hours are after dawn.

6. Because caves and other places of hiding will be blasted by flame-throwers and tank artillery, persons hiding in such places should come out immediately whenever US troops approach. If not you will be killed by flaming oil or you will face a miserable agonizing death.
