PROCLAMATION OF THE CIVILIANS OF OKINAWA FROM THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE AMERICAN FORCES.

American's objective in this battle is to render the Japanese military powerless and NOT TO HARM CIVILIANS. Therefore it is your duty and to your benefit to follow these instructions:

1. When the American forces approach, go well to the rear of the Japanese troops and seek safety.

2. When seeking shelter, do not remain with or near Japanese troops.

3. Never resist American troops anywhere. Remember, they intend no harm to you.

4. Wear light-colored clothing so that you may be easily identified.

5. Do not go through the American lines until so ordered by the Commander in Chief of the American Forces.

6. Wait for further instructions as to time, place and means of crossing. These instructions will be given when the time is ready. Do not cross until you receive them.

7. In all events, never approach the American lines at night.

Those civilians who value their lives will follow these instructions.
