Manzanar, Calif.

November 5, 1943

Dear Joe & Towru,

How are you? Towru, did you get there safe? Something came from the draft board for your Towru so be sure you get it. Towru, I don't know if you took a gamble on going to Chicago with out that draft card but anyway we have that card that sort of identifys you & so forth. We'll send that to you soon as possible. Gee, its a funny thing but I hardly seem to miss you. Moma does though & so does the Nishi Sisters) (Especially the corny jokes, they say) Mom, kind of weeped & missed you & when I cleaned out your junk & found those pictures of you, she looked at them & again weeped. Its the funniest thing but I didn't cry at all. The house is quite empty & echos when you talk loud. The things are gone and so the radio can be heard more to the next door. Towru, if theres anything you want, be sure to tell us. The P.A. is at the ware house. They came after it at 2:00 oclock.

Among your stuff I found some gum, (do you want it or shall I kinda use it?) your picture 5" x 7" & small ones & graduation pictures and boric acid, tubes, & some other things. Nothing has happened around here. Joe, we got your letter yesterday & it was good to hear from you again.

[Page 2]

My eyes jumped out of my head (practically when you said Virginia Takemura was already married. What a gal! It will be good to see the Smeltzers again. I hope we get out of here pretty soon but the other batch of people who are headed for Tulelake are still here but after they go I guess we'll be going out. I speak to Aiji all the time & have quite an interesting little conversation. The lettermans sweater is pretty swell & warm & thats all I practically wear. (In Manzanar if you wear a lettermans sweater it means that you have a boy friend) Queer people eh! (not me though) Tomorrow night we are going to a have a (kaleshakai) at our house which is a Church meeting like we had at our house back home. I'll be at the movies inorder to keep out of mischief. Joe, you told the Odahara's that you got a scholarship didn't you. Well, mom doesn't want you to tell other guys about those kind of things because too many rumors start flying about you & Mom hates to hear rumors like they are in camp.

[Page 3]

Last time when you left, Some one told some one that you got a scholarship & then after every one told everyone the wholething was just a terrible lie that you might cry over. It was like this. They said that you got 3 scholorships from different people & then some one sent you their taxes & then some one advised you to give the taxes money back but you took them & when Mrs. Odahara told Mom she felt terrible thats why I suggest that you keep those personal secrets to yourself.

Don't feel bad about this but rumors are really bad out this way.

Joe, if you have any white shirts that have just the collars torn & the rest is good, send these back to us because we can put new shirt collars on & they will be as good as new.

The weather is fine & just one thing I have is frost bites. "Ichy too." How's the snow eh?

[Page 4]

Towru, please send these thanks to the people that sent you off when you left & for the gifts & kindnesses to the following people.

Mr. & Mrs. Suzuki - 23-9-2

Kitagawa family - 23-11-1

Odahara " - 14-11-3

Nishizawa " - 33-9-2

Mrs. Tanaka - 23-7-5

Mr. & Mrs. Ichien - 4-7-5

" Kashitani - 28-

" Ioki - 14-13-2

" & Mrs. Higa - 14-12-3

And all your friends.

Towru, you probably recieved gifts from a lot of people & moma wants to know who they are so be sure to tell us in your following letters. She wants to know because she has to thank all of them for those nice gifts & etc. Towru be sure to take good care of yourself & wear those super duper long Unions.

[Page 5]

Joe, I don't do anything nowadays because this camp is so dry and I want to go out of here & go to your place. You sure do meet a lot of booches out there. I bet that place is just packed with them. Tommorrow we are going to eat at block # 20 but their kitchens no good so I'm going to eat onigiri here & have a better lunch. School is okay but Latin is sure getting complicated all of a sudden. Algebra is okay. I'm stuck with English pretty much. Especially with those crazy things that you call synonyms & antonyms. Today in history the whole class was reading & it was so quite & then all of a sudden there was a errrrrr - sound & it was kind of squeeky (someone cut the cheese) and the worst part of it was that it came from the girls section. I guess someone couldn't wait. I hope that I never feel that way in class. In gym we are learning to play speed ball & it really is complicated and hard. Something like fast ball & boy it sure is tiring & a dirty game too. Don't you think

[Page 6]

when I get home I'm all tired out & feel very very weak. I take a shower & feel fresh as a daisy. Lately I bet my letters haven't been so good because the same old routine is still on. We have some more new people in our block & they are from block eight. (Yutaka Matsumotos uncle). Also a new couple. Towru, one of Yachiyo Nakagi's brothers came back with his pop & Matsu's supposed to come back with the other Nakagi brother. Since you have left Towru, I moved the bed of mine next to the closet up & down & next to that I put the radio & card table which looks like this. The house is shore empty. then the place where the desk was looks like this.

-blind

-wastebasket

-book shelf

-desk

What do you think of our place now?

[Page 7]

How's your place getting along. I'm glad that you liked that honey dew & hope it was delicious. I bet you can't get that stuff out there

Towru, if you want me to forward any letters like to Miss Kramer, Jimmy Ito, Hiro Takemaka, Aiji or davy Kitagawa, just to save stamps, I'll be willing to give them to the people because I always see them. Save Stamps.

Say, Joe, where could you find a book full of antonyms & synonyms that will be useful? I bet you have worries just like me on my stuff. Towru, I think I give davy back that thing which is part of his P.A. okay? Thats all thats worth doing.

Well its 10 to 11:00 P.M. & I had to get this done some time so I'll sign off now.

Masako

(Little Moroni)

Tell in say lazy bum to be good. (Towru)

Joe, Moma made some flannel shorts & if you would like some she'll send some to you too. With the insaylasylum gone I sleep peaceful without any of the covers pulled off or the insaylasylum isn't here to peek in my covers & yell te he every morning. I hope you didn't spend a night in jail Towru. (The draft card classification)

Its 11:00 & I got to get a lot of sleep so

gooten knoc (german)
