May Minami was born on January 26, 1914, in Oxnard, California. She grew up in Gardena, California, where her father was the first person to sell insurance to other Japanese community members. During WWII, her parents were arrested by the FBI and the family was sent to the concentration camp at Rohwer, Arkansas.
