"description": "Ken Inose was born in 1933 in Los Angeles, California, as one of four children to Sejiro and Yoshiko Inose. Before World War II, Ken lived in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles where he had ethnically diverse neighbors. His father was a salesman and his mother was a housewife. When the war broke out, Ken was eight years old and he and his family were initially sent to the Santa Anita Racetrack for processing and eventually sent to the Rohwer, concentration camp, Arkansas. After the war, Ken and his family initially moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and eventually returned to Los Angeles and to Gardena, California. In Gardena, his family started a nursery business. \r\n\r\nThis interview is part of the South Bay History Project created by the South Bay Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League.",

The letter discusses the Japanese American incarcerees returning to California and the West Coast. He describes the returning people as \"half bred or wife of Caucasian\" and a female attending Pasadena Junior College. He expresses his fear that it would be hard to return and restart their farm in Lawndale, California because of the lack of resources, such as tools, machinery, and money, and that his family needs to start over again. He also describes the situation when his family was forced to leave, leaving his trunk in the Thomas' garage and asking him to send it to him in Santa Anita. He is concerned about his farm, which was being operated by the Chinese, as well as his properties in Lawndale, and asks Thomas to take pictures of his house and yard to see how they look after two and half years. Family was transferred to Tule Lake in response to father's answers on the so-called \"loyalty questionnaire.\" Turned eighteen in Tule Lake, and also signed \"no-no\" on the questionnaire and renounced U.S. citizenship. Sent to Fort Lincoln (Bismarck) internment camp, North Dakota before going to Japan and reuniting with family. Lived in Japan for a number of years, taking a job with the U.S. army, and volunteering for the U.S. Air Force. Eventually regained citizenship and returned to the U.S."

She describes her incarceration in the Santa Anita Temporary Assembly Center and in the Poston camp in southeastern Arizona; and her family's togetherness during these periods of incarceration; her engagement to Dave Masuoka in the camps; her family's journey to join her sisters in the Poston incarceration camp; her exit from the camp and process of finding a sponsor; her experience as a docent for JANM and of telling her story to her grandson's class; Dave's family history and his involvement in the Second World War; a close friend's family and their involvement in 442nd army infantry known as the Japanese unit in World War II; the impact of this friendship and how it led to an exhibition in JANM; and her thoughts on the impact of this story on American history. "bio": "Nisei male. Born March 1, 1915, in Los Angeles, California. Spent prewar childhood in Long Beach, California, but attended grade school and junior high in Japan. Returned to the United States to attend high school. In 1941, was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Camp Roberts, San Luis Obispo, California for basic training. Was among the first Japanese American draftees. When World War II broke out, was summarily discharged from the army, reclassified to an enlisted reserve unit, and sent to Santa Anita Assembly Center and then incarcerated at Tule Lake concentration camp, California. Within two months of being incarcerated, was recalled for duty in the Military Intelligence Service. Received Bronze Star for securing the surrender of Japanese military and nonmilitary personnel on the island of Saipan. Served with MacArthur's General Headquarters in Japan."
