Received draft notice one day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and joined the Military Intelligence Service. After being denied furlough to visit his mother in Manzanar concentration camp, refused to serve overseas with his unit. Was placed in the 1800 Engineering Battalion, made up of Japanese, German and Italian Americans considered \"suspect\" by the U.S. government. After World War II, became the vice president of the export division for Honda, dedicating much of his time to promoting better trade relations between the U.S. and Japan."

The FBI felt that this lead to a \"sense of loyalty and subservience to the Imperial Government of Japan.\" The FBI billed the Sokoku Kai as \"one of the most aggressive and active of the Japanese nationalist organizations\" and selected members for \"their intense loyalty and belief in the deity of the Mikado.\" Dr. Koyama's involvement and subsequent fundraising for the Japanese Chamber of Commerce also played a key part in their decision as they felt this organization \"retarded\" the Americanization of American-born Japanese.",

"description": "Caption on front [translation]: \"Ambassador Grew to Retire After 9 Years in Tokyo. Plans to Return to America in Early May. (Tokyo 21 Domei). According to today's Yomiuri Shimbun, US Ambassador to Japan Joseph Grew will likely return home on a leave of absence in early May. The same paper also stated that Ambassador Grew hopes to return to Tokyo after three or four months. \r\n\r\nGrew fervently desires to improve US-Japan relations, which have been poor since the China Incident broke out in October of last year. He resolutely gave an advisory speech to the Japanese attendants at a banquet hosted by the America-Japan Society at the Imperial Hotel shortly after returning to Tokyo. He proposed to US government authorities at the same time that a provisional agreement be made to take the place of the now invalid US-Japan commerce treaty and held important talks with the foreign minister, General Kichisaburo Nomura, on improving US-Japan relations. Although he has worked hard, relations have unfortunately not significantly improved and he seems to have come to the conclusion that things have reached a level where an approach based on new ideas taking into account the development of the new situation in China is needed.\r\n\r\nAmbassador Grew has returned to the US and met with government officials four times during his nine years as ambassador in Tokyo, in 1934, 1935, 1936, and 1939. Since Grew has already stated that Japan would likely be his last post as a diplomat, the Yomiuri said that it can be presumed that he will likely retire after returning to the US. The paper lastly concluded that the attitude of whoever will be made the next ambassador towards Japan will be watched. (Photograph is of Ambassador Grew). [Stamped] March 21, 1940.\"",

When the war broke out, Yuta Masukawa was visiting Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. He rode on a streetcar to get to Little Tokyo and bought a record, \"Shina no yoru,\" for his sister, Mitsuko. [Left] Alameda Street was a busy street and streetcars were running alongside the street. There was a Japanese school, which was called \"Banguru,\" on the west side of the street. I visited the post office to check my incoming mails. There was nothing for me. I came here, following my uncle, Koichi Naohara, who had been already settled in the United States. Although I came to the U.S. all the way from Japan traveling by a big ship called \"Kamakura-maru,\" there were no jobs available for me because of the Great Depression. I had a decent job in Japan, working for a post office, which was a Japanese government job, near the Hiroshima Station, and it was difficult for me to accept a job which paid me only 30 cents per hour in the U.S. While I was spending time alone and feeling lonely, I met Masukawa family which had eight children. I was pleased to learn that Mrs. Masukawa was Shuzo Myoren's sister who was from Karuga Asa-gun, Hiroshima. Once I met Mitzi, one of the Maskawa family's daughters, I fell in love.
