She informs that she has brought some items from the package to Tsukiyo Okasako and is going to bring other items to the Nakano and the Yamanakas as the Okines requested. She learns that Fumiko Yamanaka has left for the U.S., and regrets not being able to give her any gifts to bring with her to the U.S. The letter is resealed with the tape, \"OPENED BY MIL. CEN. Jokichi Yamanaka updates on his family noting that his his daughter Tomomi graduated from school and works as an interpreter at the U.S. military camp, Camp Kure. Mr. Nakano's house construction starts on April 14 and 15 and he is going to help them. He also writes about his reentry permit to the U.S. He was notified by United States Embassy that the process would take three to four months and he assumes that his earliest return to the U.S. would be sometime in August or September. He also laments about high inflation in Japan and provides some examples of the high prices of certain goods, including meat, konnyaku, age [deep fried tofu], train tickets, postage, a salted mackerel, dried young sardines, and candies. She thanks him for the gifts including 4 lbs of sugar, safety pins, needles, thread, clothes, and towels which are scarce in Japan. She informs that Jokichi Yamanaka brought the gifts to her. She reminisces about Masao Okine's visit when he was stationed in Japan as a Nisei soldier. She also writes about her family in the letter. She lost her husband nine years ago when her two sons were ages nine years and two years respectively. Jokichi Yamanaka often helps her in growing rice and she expects her sons to be able to help her soon. She and other people in Japan wish to meet the Okines sometime. "description": "A letter from Sueno Nakano in Hiroshima, Japan to her sister, Tomeyo Okine. The letter is mailed under her husband's name, Kamekichi Nakano. In the letter, Sueno laments her struggles and grieves for the losses of Sunada family members [Tomeyo and Sueno's parent's family]. In losing their four brothers, Sueno takes over the responsibilities for the Sunada family and details the tragic experiences of one of the brothers, Otomatsu Sunada. Otomatsu resided in Manila, the Philippines, with his wife and two sons. He visited Japan, leaving his family in the Philippines, he died of tuberculosis while at Sueno's place. His wife was killed in the Philippines and their sons were orphaned. Sueno and her husband are adopting one of the sons and will assume full responsibilities for the Sunada family which makes Sueno feel that she owes her husband. She also writes about Jokichi Yamanaka, who will to return to the U.S. in May. She wishes that he could bring some dried persimmons she makes but she has learned they are not allowed to be brought into the U.S. She writes about gifts including wool yarns, jackets, safety pins, sugar, towels, sewing needles and threads from the Okines brought by Jokichi and expresses her appreciation. Additionally, she requests ajinomoto [monosodium glutamate] and a winter coat for her husband. The arrival date of the letter, March 1, 1948, and the replied and shipping date, March 6, is recorded on the envelope. "description": "Roy Matsumoto's maternal grandparents. When Roy went to Japan, his maternal grandfather had already passed away. Roy did not have the privilege of meeting him, but enjoyed living with his grandmother, Tomi, for several winters. Roy's maternal grandfather, Shinjiro Kimura, was a famous fencing instructor for Lord Asano of Hiroshima. As a samurai, he engaged in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868. He also participated in the Choshu Expedition and the Seinan no Eki (The Satsuma Rebellion of 1877). He was a well-known philanthropist. With Roy's maternal grandmother Tomi, they adopted or fostered many orphans during the Great Epidemic (1918 Spanish flu). There is a monument commemorating Shinjiro Kimura's contributions to the Hiroshima community.",
