"title": "American Concentration Camps VOLUME 6 June, 1942- December, 1942",
"description": "Volume 6 divides into six sections. Description about this volume reads directly from the book as follows: Section 1 presents archival documents from June 1942 that show the first major modifications of relocation policies and depict the resistance by Western Defense Command to any amelioration of the condition of the Japanese Americans. Section 2 contains selected pages from a Congressional Record from June 22, 1942 which debates a bill to authorize the incarceration of any person of Japanese ancestry anywhere in the United States or its territories is but one more example of the willingness of some members of Congress to go farther than the executive branch was willing to go. Section 3 features archival documents from July 1942 that show the increasing uneasiness of officials in the interior western states to which Japanese Americans were being shipped. Section 4 features Reports of Civilian Agencies to the Wartime Civil Control Administration from June 1942. These largely self-congratulatory reports, produced by agencies, assisted the Army in the process of getting the Japanese Americans into camp \"humanely.\" Section 5 features a collection of documents from the Army Inspections of Assembly Centers from July 1942 that demonstrates that the living and sanitary conditions that prevailed in the Army-run Assembly Centers were often deficient. Section 6 presents archival documents from August 1942 to December 1942 that attempt to justify the relocation. Section 7 includes a Digest of Newspaper Editorials by Western Defense Command from January 31, 1942 to December 9, 1942 which support Western Defense command policies and some press for even more stringent measures against the Japanese Americans.",

"description": "Volume 8 divides into five sections. Description about this volume reads directly from the book as follows: Part 1 features archival documents from 1944 and 1945 that depict the winding down of the relocation program. Part 2 features selected pages of a Congressional Record from February 23, 1944 and June 23, 1944 that resulted in the passage of a statute, requested by the Department of Justice, to facilitate the renunciation of United States citizenship by Japanese Americans as part of the \"segregation\" program. Part 3 features Army and Navy Intelligence Reports from 1944 and 1945 that show that west-coast based intelligence officers continued to harbor the same kinds of attitudes toward Japanese Americans that triggered the relocation long after such views ceased to prevail at the top of the chain of command. Part 4 features documents from The War Department and the Japanese Evacuation and Resettlement Study from October 1942 to October 1943 that illustrate the possible ethical conflicts involved when scholars bargain for special access to contemporary government documents. Part 5 features documents, dating from August 1941 to May of 1944, that relate to how differently the 150,000 Japanese Americans in Hawaii were treated during the war despite their greater incidence and proximity to Imperial Japanese Forces.",

"description": "Volume 4 divides into three sections. Description about this volume reads directly from the book as follows: Section 1 contains archival documents from April 1942 about the growing opposition of western officials outside of the West Coast to having Japanese Americans moved to their localities. Section 2 contains the Federal government Surveys of Public Opinion dated January 1942 to August 1942 that thoroughly and unscientifically attempted to gauge public opinion, done by the federal Office of Government Reports. The surveys were also circulated among high government officials. Section 3 contains documents dated March 1942 to November 1944 that concerns the complex relationship between the Japanese American Citizens League and the Federal Government. The leadership of the Japanese American Citizens league, as the correspondence here shows, perceived that the political heads of the U.S. Army, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and Assistant Secretary John J. McCloy and his uniformed staff, were likely targets of a \"how to win friends and influence people\" approach which even included small gifts. Perceptively, no such approach was made to General John L. DeWitt, Colonel Karl R. Bendetsen, or their subordinates. In recent years, there has been increasing criticism of what some have termed the \"over-enthusiastic collaboration\" between the JACL and the Army.",

Description about this volume reads directly from the book as follows: The first section contains archival documents regarding pre-Pearl Harbor materials that deal largely with discussion between the War and the Justice Departments over responsibilities for enemy aliens in case of war and with internal Army documents about construction of accommodations for enemy aliens and interned merchant seamen. The next section of the book pertains to the dates of December 7, 1941 to April 20, 1942 where documents show the ways in which the lives of enemy aliens in general and of Japanese Americans in particular were affected, and how, over time, most of the options of the latter disappeared. The final section pertains to archival documents that demonstrate the growing conflicts between the War Department and the Department of Justice and show the rising concern about internal security in both the government and the nation at large.",

Section 2 contains the Congressional Record from March 19, 1942 which contain the entire congressional debate over the status which made it a federal crime for a civilian in an area that was not under martial law to fail to obey the instructions of a commanding general and his deputies. Section 3 contains the Preliminary Report and Recommendations report dated March 19, 1942 that endorsed what the military wanted to do and was doing and had it been otherwise, congressional approval might not have been so routine. Section 4 contains archival documents, dated March 20, 1942 to March 31, 1942, that shows the policy of forced removal put into effect; in this period the first of General De Witt's Civilian Exclusion Orders (printed in volume 1) was issued affecting the Bainbridge Islanders of Puget Sound, and the first Relocation Center was opened at Manzanar, California.",
