"bioghist": "The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) was originally formed in 1929 and is the oldest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States. They strive “to secure and maintain the civil rights of Japanese Americans and all others who are victimized by injustice and bigotry” (JACL mission statement). Prior to WWII the organization was active in lobbying for legislation regarding citizenship rights of Japanese Americans. However, as the war broke out, the JACL was criticized harshly by those who believed the organization should have done more to fight the incarceration of Japanese Americans. This continues to be a painful source of division within the Japanese American community today. After the war ended the JACL returned to their civil rights work and became an important force in reversing discriminatory legislation and lobbying for greater Japanese and other immigrant rights. The JACL also played a key role in the drafting and passing of redress legislation. For more information see: http://encyclopedia.densho.org/Japanese_American_Citizens_League/ \r\n\r\nThe Pacific Citizen was originally created as the JACL’s organizational newsletter, which later turned into a fully developed newspaper during World War II. The first edition of the Pacific Citizen was published in San Francisco in September 1929 under the name \"Nikkei Shimin\" (Japanese American Citizen). During the war, production of the Pacific Citizen was moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. It served as the most articulate voice of mainland Japanese Americans and was the leading source of news to the community. Once the war ended production was moved to Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, where it continues to be produced today. For more information see: http://encyclopedia.densho.org/Pacific_Citizen_(newspaper)/",
