"bioghist": "Hirokichi \"Harry\" Hayashi immigrated California in about 1887 at the age of 17. He attended Alameda High School while working as a houseboy. In 1906 along with two of his brothers, Hirokichi opened a flower shop in Alameda on Park Street. In 1908, Hirokichi married his first wife Ken Mayeda, together the couple had 3 children, Henry Taro, Midori, and Togo, between 1910 and 1914. Sometime between 1914 and 1919 Ken (Mayeda) Hayashi traveled to Japan with Togo, where they both contracted meningitis and passed away. In 1920 Hirokichi married his second wife Kin Nakayawa. Together they had one son, Warren Jiro. In 1910 Hirokichi and his two brothers purchased 11 acres of land in Oakland and started a wholesale nursery. At some point the brothers had a falling out, and Hirokichi bought out his two brothers and became the sole proprietor of the nursery. In 1917 Hirokichi was awarded a US patent for his plant wrapping device, which he later sold to a Chicago businessman. As his sons, Henry and Warren, grew up they helped out at the nursery. In the 1930s Henry took over the management of the company. In 1938 Henry Taro married Aiko Takimoto. Together the couple had 4 children, Norman Makoto, Gerald Tadashi, Patrick Saburo, and Marilyn, between 1939 and 1948. \r\n\r\nIn 1942 the family (except Midori who had married and moved to Japan) was detained at the Tanforan Assembly Center, and then at Topaz. Before their forced remove to Tanforan, the family had about 10 days notice to prepare. They managed to sell off their heavy equipment, rent out their house, and get the household furniture stored with friends and employees. But they were unable to find anyone willing to rent or lease their nursery. During the war the family was able to retain ownership of the land. To support their family, Henry and Warren took short-term leaves and worked at the Chicago shipyards. This left Aiko to raise the children and care for Hirokichi and Kin in camp. The family left camp in 1945 and returned to Oakland, California. Their property was in poor condition, house vandalized and the greenhouses near-completed destroyed. Henry worked as a gardener and Warren as a government clerk to support the family. Together, during their free-time, they both worked to reestablish the family nursery. In 1949 Henry and Warren purchased land in Union City to restart the nursery. In the 1950s they were able to start rebuilding the greenhouses and by 1952 they left their day jobs and work at the nursery full time. In 1957 Aiko (Takimoto) Hayashi passed away. In 1964 Norman started working at the family nursery as a delivery driver and helping his father build new greenhouses. In 1977 Norman married Gayle Taketomo. Eventually, Norman took over the management of the company and ran it with help from various family members until 1993 when they closed the business.",
