    "description": "The Matsuoka Family collection consists of personal family documents, photographs, books, and objects belonging to the Matsuoka family. The collection is primarily made up of photographs, Harry's family history, and Walter's high school experience. Also included are materials from the Amache concentration camp where the family was incarcerated and reunions that the family was involved with. <a href=\"http://ddr.densho.org/interviews/ddr-densho-1010-3-1/\"_blank\">Walter Matsuoka</a> and <a href=\"http://ddr.densho.org/interviews/ddr-densho-1010-5-1/\">David Matsuoka</a> completed interviews with the Preserving California's Japantowns Collection.",

    "bioghist": "Harry, born Tomio Ogata, marries Chiyo Matsuoka in 1912 and takes his wife's family name. He later changes his first name to Harry during the United States naturalization process, becoming Harry Matsuoka. Harry and Chiyo have two children, Bessie (born Haruko, but later changes her name) and Yoko. Chiyo and Yoko pass away c. 1918 and Harry takes a new wife, Juyo, c. 1919. They have six more children: Toshio, Yoshio, Rose, Sho, Walter Nobuo (born September 26, 1926), and David Kengo (born December 21, 1929). Living in Walnut Grove, California, Harry owned and operated a shoe sales and repair business. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the family was removed to the Merced Assembly Center and later the Amache concentration camp. Walter remains active in the Boy Scouts of America and several school sports during and after incarceration. Post-World War II, the family returns to California and Walter and the younger siblings finish their primary education at Courtland Joint Union High School. Walter is later drafted and serves in the armed forces during the Korean War and remains involved in several veteran organizations. Other family members are also active participants in Amache and Walnut Grove reunions. After the Korean War, Walter starts a career as an aviation mechanic and marries Kazuko c. 1969. Walter and Kazuko have one son, Kent. Walter passed away on March 1, 2012 in California.",
