Caption on reverse: "Meet the American 'Mayor' of Kyoto. Tokyo - Often dubbed the Mayor of Kyoto, Miss Florence Denton, American missionary-school marm, has Japan's ancient capital at her command. Half a century of servicce to Doshisha University of that city has brought her this unique recognition. Miss Denton who came to Japan from Pasadena, California, in 1888, is now retired and lives quietly among the people she loves in a modest home in the compounds . . . the university. To her home has come every American celebrity . . . visits Kyoto, including colonel and Mrs. Charles Lindbergh. Here she stands among the beautiful iris in her lovely Japanese garden."
