Taught camp inmates dressmaking as well as Japanese dancing and singing. Converted to Christianity as a result of weekly visits by Christian missionaries to the camp. After the war ended and the camp was nearly empty, went into a prolonged and difficult labor, requiring that the staff reopen the hospital and she and her husband stay at Gila River after everyone else had left. Following World War II, Mr. Korematsu moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he married and raised a family before returning to California. In the early 1980s, his case was reopened after the discovery of a crucial document indicating that in the original 1944 case, the federal government had lied to the high court. Born December 24, 1930, in Los Angeles, California. Grew up in California where parents ran a successful grocery store business. During World War II, removed to the Santa Anita Assembly Center, California, and the Heart Mountain concentration camp, Wyoming. While in Heart Mountain, became involved in Boy Scouts activities. Left camp and returned to California, then was drafted into the army.
