Left to right: Kumataro Nishimura, Kadju Nishimura, Jimmie Yorita, Neal Frost (son of one of the teachers at Tule Lake), and Patsy Yorita. Tule Lake was drained in the early 1900s. The camp was located on the old lake bed, where people found shells for making jewelry to sell to camp personnel. Shells were scarce, and digging became competitive. To beat the rush, some people got up at sunrise and dug waist-deep holes in order to find the shells. Some had homemade wire sieves for sifting the sand.","links_children":"ddr-densho-2-47","creators":[{"role":"photographer","namepart":"Frost, Jack"}],"topics":[{"term":"World War II -- Concentration camps -- Social and recreational activities","id":"195"}],"format":"img","language":["eng"],"persons":[{"namepart":"Nishimura, Kumataro"},{"namepart":"Nishimura, Kadju"},{"namepart":"Yorita, Jimmie"},{"namepart":"Frost, Neal"},{"namepart":"Yorita, Patsy"}],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"pcc","genre":"photograph","location":"Tule Lake concentration camp, California","facility":[{"term":"Tule Lake","id":"10"}],"creation":"c. 1943","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Frost, Jack photographer Nishimura, Kumataro \nNishimura, Kadju \nYorita, Jimmie \nFrost, Neal \nYorita, Patsy","download_large":"ddr-densho-2-47-mezzanine-28f4a98ede-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-97-155","model":"entity","index":"1 1076/{'value': 2211, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-97-155/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-97-155/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-97/ddr-densho-97-155-mezzanine-813e3ff494-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-97/ddr-densho-97-155-mezzanine-813e3ff494-a.jpg"},"title":"Heart Mountain Sentinel Vol. II No. 46 (November 13, 1943)","description":"Selected article titles: \"New Relocation Program Starts.
