Ray was first involved with JACL in the late 80's and early 90's encouraged by community leader Al Sugiyama and others, including Janice Deguchi and Joy Misako St. Germain, who encouraged Ray to run for the office of Seattle JACL President. Ray reflected on organized efforts at time, such as Initiative 200 to end affirmative action, and opposition against the gay and lesbian community. JACL was beginning to find new paths as a civil rights organization, such as collaborating and supporting the American Jewish Committee and the LGBTQIA community. The JACL membership was the powerful force then as it is today to rally the community on issues that impact everyone. JACL started to move beyond the focus on redress to work with other racial and ethnic communities and took the work to a new level, with younger leaders taking on leadership roles. As he and his family are Seattle natives, he expressed hope and gratitude for the recent work of JACL to support Black Lives Matter and on immigration issues. His work on the Pike Place Market Council and the progress seen in the area of minority and women owned businesses demonstrates how much impact volunteer work can have to make positive change. His parents' experiences. being incarcerated during WWII and his upbringing had a tremendous influence on his not taking for granted the importance of continuing the work of civil rights and social justice. He believes that the success of JACL is due to the ongoing commitment of the membership and leadership.","extent":"0:36:39","links_children":"ddr-sjacl-2-41","creators":[{"role":"narrator","id":1039,"namepart":"Ray Ishii"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Ana Tanaka"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Joy Misako St. Germain"}],"format":"vh","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Seattle JACL","rights":"cc","genre":"interview","creation":"21-Apr-22","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Ray Ishii narrator \nAna Tanaka interviewer \nJoy Misako St. Germain interviewer","download_large":"ddr-sjacl-2-41-1-mezzanine-f39732270b-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-sjacl-2-39","model":"entity","index":"2 602/{'value': 997, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-sjacl-2-39/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-sjacl-2-39/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-sjacl-2/ddr-sjacl-2-39-1-mezzanine-5a1ba70fb7-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-sjacl-2/ddr-sjacl-2-39-1-mezzanine-5a1ba70fb7-a.jpg"},"title":"Bill Tashima Interview","description":"In this interview, Ana Tanaka led a conversation with Bill Tashima. Being one of just a few Japanese American families where she grew up, she felt a deep longing for a sense of community. Her love for Japanese American culture is one of the main factors that led to her moving to the Pacific Northwest. Joy was welcomed into the Seattle Chapter, and quickly became active. Chapter members were very encouraging, and soon she was active in the issues that JACL was engaged in during the 1990's. A clear leader who cared about the organization and was committed to their mission statement, she became chapter president. Joy helped establish many of the organizational structures that helped the Seattle Chapter sustain itself into a new century. Joy is optimistic about the newer generation of JACL activists and the work the organization has done to engage the younger generation. With the renewed focus of allyship with other communities and organizations, she feels as though everyone--the younger and older generations--can learn from each other as the JACL continues its work.","extent":"0:50:59","links_children":"ddr-sjacl-2-35","creators":[{"role":"narrator","id":1033,"namepart":"Joy Misako St. Germain"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Ana Tanaka"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Dr. Kyle Kinoshita"}],"format":"vh","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Seattle JACL","rights":"cc","genre":"interview","creation":"2-Mar-22","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Joy Misako St. Germain narrator \nAna Tanaka interviewer \nDr. Kyle Kinoshita interviewer","download_large":"ddr-sjacl-2-35-1-mezzanine-69f898b3f3-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-sjacl-2-40","model":"entity","index":"15 615/{'value': 997, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-sjacl-2-40/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-sjacl-2-40/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-sjacl-2/ddr-sjacl-2-40-1-mezzanine-cc4c46a19c-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-sjacl-2/ddr-sjacl-2-40-1-mezzanine-cc4c46a19c-a.jpg"},"title":"In Memory of Kip Tokuda Interview","description":"In this session, Ana Tanaka led a panel of Kip Tokuda's friends (Janice Deguchi, Akemi Matsumoto, Rep. This collection of interviews is a part of Seattle JACL's project to document and pass on its history and legacy. Underwritten by grants from the National JACL Legacy Fund and the Robert Chinn Foundation, teams of Seattle JACL members and University of Washington student interns interviewed key Seattle JACL leaders. In cases where a key leader is deceased, the interview team led a conversation with the leader's friends and family. In researching Seattle JACL's history, the Chapter recognized the debt owed to leaders who had the vision and perseverance to inspire members and transform the Chapter into an organization of activism and advocacy. The interviews were designed as \"conversations\" not only to focus on facts and events, but to delve deeper into the climate of the period in which these leaders served and the barriers that they overcame. The interviews involved iconic leaders from earlier years who created Seattle JACL legacy of today and also current leaders who are creating Seattle JACL legacy for tomorrow.","links_children":"ddr-sjacl-2","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Seattle JACL","public":"1","rights":"cc","status":"completed","search_hidden":"","download_large":"ddr-sjacl-2-33-1-mezzanine-4d28718cbf-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-sjacl-1","model":"collection","index":"23 623/{'value': 997, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-sjacl-1/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-sjacl-1/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-sjacl-1/ddr-sjacl-1-1-mezzanine-101fcf5a2a-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-sjacl-1/ddr-sjacl-1-1-mezzanine-101fcf5a2a-a.jpg"},"title":"Seattle JACL Newsletter Collection","description":"Bulletins from the Seattle Chapter of the Japanese American Citizen League covering the years of 1950-1991.","links_children":"ddr-sjacl-1","language":[""],"contributor":"Seattle JACL","public":"1","rights":"cc","status":"completed","search_hidden":"","download_large":"ddr-sjacl-1-1-mezzanine-101fcf5a2a-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-114-602","model":"entity","index":"24 624/{'value': 997, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-114-602/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-114-602/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-114/ddr-densho-114-602-mezzanine-9c3a34330c-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-114/ddr-densho-114-602-mezzanine-9c3a34330c-a.jpg"},"title":"Nisei War Memorial Monument","description":"Dr. Kelly Yamada of the JACL presenting a wreath at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.","links_children":"ddr-densho-114-602","creators":[{"role":"photographer","namepart":"Ogawa, Elmer"}],"topics":[{"term":"Military service -- Veterans' organizations","id":"19"},{"term":"Community activities -- Funerals","id":"308"}],"format":"img","language":["eng"],"persons":[{"namepart":"Yamada, Kelly"}],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"pcc","genre":"photograph","location":"Seattle, Washington","creation":"1953","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Ogawa, Elmer photographer Yamada, Kelly","download_large":"ddr-densho-114-602-mezzanine-9c3a34330c-a.jpg"}],"query":{"query":{"query_string":{"query":"Seattle JACL","fields":["id","model","links_html","links_json","links_img","links_thumb","links_children","status","public","title","description","contributor","creators","creators.namepart","facility","format","genre","geography","label","language","creation","location","persons","rights","topics","image_url","display_name","bio","extent","search_hidden"],"analyze_wildcard":false,"allow_leading_wildcard":false,"default_operator":"AND"}},"aggs":{"facility":{"nested":{"path":"facility"},"aggs":{"facility_ids":{"terms":{"field":"facility.id","size":1000}}}},"format":{"terms":{"field":"format"}},"genre":{"terms":{"field":"genre"}},"rights":{"terms":{"field":"rights"}},"topics":{"nested":{"path":"topics"},"aggs":{"topics_ids":{"terms":{"field":"topics.id","size":1000}}}}},"_source":["id","model","links_html","links_json","links_img","links_thumb","links_children","status","public","title","description","contributor","creators","creators.namepart","facility","format","genre","geography","label","language","creation","location","persons","rights","topics","image_url","display_name","bio","extent","search_hidden"]}}
