Hasegawa witnessed the mass eviction of Japanese residents from Terminal Island and was later imprisoned with his family at Santa Anita Race Track and concentration camps in California and Rohwer, Arkansas. He was drafted by the US Army and released because of poor health. He worked as a mechanic for Chevrolet in Chicago and at a vineyard near Lodi before returning to Torrance in 1948.
