The play premiered in New York in 1997. Gates and documentary film director Allan Holzman filmed her performances during the run of the play in Los Angeles in early 1998. To try to recapture the effect of Fujikawa talking directly to the audience, Holzman positioned cameras on stage that she could talk into and added additional historic photographs and video. As hinted at by the film's title, Chrysanthemums and Salt largely focuses on two of the major industries that employed Japanese Americans before the war, growing and marketing chrysanthemums and salt companies that took advantage of the region's natural suitability for salt evaporation ponds. The film also covers Japanese American community life, the role of the churches and the outbreak of World War II and the reaction to the subsequent forced removal. Chrysanthemums and Salt is notable for including interviews with several Issei , conducted in Japanese with translated voiceovers. \"Host\" Jane Yanehiro narrates the film and also appears on camera.\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Densho Resource Guide at: Chrysanthemums and Salt.\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Digital Library of the Japanese American Incarceration Films at: https://archive.org/details/ddr-densho-1024-60.","extent":"00:27:00","links_children":"ddr-densho-1024-60","topics":[{"term":"Geographic communities -- California","id":"271"},{"term":"Industry and employment -- Agriculture -- Flower growers","id":"346"}],"format":"av","contributor":"Densho","rights":"nocc","genre":"motion_picture","creation":"1994","status":"completed","search_hidden":"","download_large":"ddr-densho-1024-60-mezzanine-035c6d3fcf-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-1001","model":"collection","index":"14 2089/{'value': 2119, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1001/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-1001/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-1001/denshovh-hfumiko-02-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-1001/denshovh-hfumiko-02-a.jpg"},"title":"Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community Collection","description":"This collection consists of interviews conducted by the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC). Summarizes evidence found in the testimony, including character of Faucett, details of the relationship between Faucett and the Itabashi family, and mental state and communicative ability of Faucett in the months leading up to his death from cancer. The judge ultimately rules that there is not sufficient evidence to prove that Faucett was unsound of mind at the time the will was written, that it was produced under undue influence by Itabashi, or that it was not a valid legal document. Jogi first discusses the choice he had to face in staying in America or leaving for Japan. He knows life in the US will be difficult and doesn't think he will ever see Los Angeles again. He seems worried of having to either start over from scratch, like his parents had had to or else stay in Manzanar \"as part of it's dirt.\" From childhood, Jogi wanted to sail the seas: before the war, he hoped to become a commercial radio telegraph operator for a ship. He would prefer a cargo ship but it would be more likely he would have worked on a tuna chipper for more regular employment. Since coming to camp, Jogi completely gave up on this dream. Much of the body consists of his struggles to live without bitterness toward the US and what incidents have caused this internal struggle. He will try to relocate to the East or Midwest to work on a farm. He seems to have little hope for the future in general but knows it will be better than current conditions. Okine, February 18, 1946 [in Japanese]","description":"A letter from Masao Okine to his parents, Seiichi and Tomeyo Okine, along with a note in English. He writes from Tokyo, Japan, where he is stationed as a Nisei soldier. The letter is mailed via San Francisco by the U.S. Postal Service. In the letter, Masao informs that he has been transferred from Sagamihara to Tokyo, Japan a month ago and received only three letters from his parents since then. He assumes that the arrival of other letters would be delayed because of his address change. He worries about his family in California and informs that he is going to visit Hiroshima to see the relatives and friends. He also encloses an English note stating that he needs 4 cartons of cigarettes and mixed candies to be shipped. He instructs his parents to bring the note to the U.S. Post Office when they ship the cigarettes and candies to Japan. He also describes his life in Japan: Tokyo is convenient and he made friends with the Japanese. He often visits a friend's place and is treated as if he is one of their family members. The arrival date of the letter, March 18, 1946, and the replied date, March 21, 1946, are recorded. Also the shipping fees, 25 cents, are recorded. Molotov. It can't be said that there isn't a little sadness at the withdrawal of Litvinov, who held the position of People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs (foreign minister) for a full nine years and pushed around Europe to an obnoxious degree. His replacement is, in marked contrast to Litvinov's unrefined nature, stylish with a broad forehead and pince-nez... Molotov currently holds the high position of Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars (the equivalent of prime minister).\r\n\r\nHe is known as 'wise Molotov' and although he has a severe stutter, he is patient and gives lengthy speeches. He has a sickly face, looks bereft of life, and always wears his pince-nez when he goes out. That he gives the appearance of a member of the urban intelligentsia may be due to his Moscow origin and graduation from a commercial school.\r\n\r\nMolotov is still rather young, turning 49 this year. He joined the Communist party in 1906 and was one of those who sparked the revolutionary movement in St. Petersburg at the time of the 1917 revolution. Stalin's right arm, he has been important in the Soviet Union ever since, gaining the position of prime minister in 1931.\r\n\r\nHow will Molotov handle the 'negotiations for an Anglo-Soviet pact,' the legacy of his Anglophile predecessor Litvinov? He touches his balding forehead and fiddles with his glasses... it seems he's become rather busy. Born 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. Grew up in the countryside outside of Baltimore with his parents, younger sister, and maternal grandmother. Raised Catholic, he attended public schools until graduating in 1936 at age seventeen. Began working for the Baltimore News Post in 1937 until the draft of 1940 when he was called to serve one year in the U.S. armed forces. Joined the army at the age of twenty-one, well aware of Hitler's aggression in Europe and fairly certain the U.S. would have to join the war effort to stop him. Went through basic training and was just 2 months away from being discharged at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Mr. Frisino shares his memories of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed and his own personal reaction to the bombing. Went through training as a radio operator, met and married his wife, Harriette, and went through rigorous Officer Candidate School before being shipped overseas to fight for 2 years in the jungles of Burma as a communications supply officer. In 1945, returned home to his wife in Seattle, Washington and began his career at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer where he worked for over 50 years. In this interview, Mr. Frisino shares the memories of his own life, as well as his perspective on issues of race and ethnicity.
(Mr. Frisino was suffering from a slight cough during the two days of this interview.)","extent":"03:56:21","links_children":"ddr-densho-1000-117","creators":[{"role":"narrator","oh_id":115,"namepart":"Joseph Frisino"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Jenna Brostrom"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Stephen Fugita"},{"role":"videographer","namepart":"Dana Hoshide"}],"format":"vh","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"interview","location":"Seattle, Washington","creation":"June 20-21, 2000","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Joseph Frisino narrator \nJenna Brostrom interviewer \nStephen Fugita interviewer \nDana Hoshide videographer","download_large":"denshovh-fjoseph-01-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-1000-123","model":"entity","index":"23 2098/{'value': 2119, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1000-123/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-1000-123/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-1000/denshovh-itsuguo-01-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-1000/denshovh-itsuguo-01-a.jpg"},"title":"Tsuguo \"Ike\" Ikeda Interview I","description":"Nisei male.
