Formed mainly to investigate matters surrounding the incarceration and to recommend appropriate remedies, the CWRIC had no power to correct grievances and was viewed as a \"copout\" by those fighting for more immediate redress. Still, hearings were conducted in 20 cities across the nation beginning in 1981, and in 1982 the CWRIC issued its report 'Personal Justice Denied.' It was an exhaustive work that combined the testimonies of former camp inmates given at the hearings and research conducted by a team led by Aiko Yoshinaga Herzig. Herzig and legal historian Peter Irons discovered declassified documents verifying that the government had withheld information showing that there was no military necessity in the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans. Ultimately, the CWRIC recommended, among other things, $20,000 individual compensation to those incarcerated and a formal government apology. This recommendation would be the basis for the many redress bills that were to follow.\r\nThe collection also includes a selection of written testimonies submitted to the Commission in 1981 for the Seattle, Washington, and Washington, D.C., hearings. Also included are selected written testimonies submitted for hearings on the Civil Liberties Act of 1983, H.R. 4110 and S. 2116.","extent":"353 documents","links_children":"ddr-densho-67","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Densho","public":"1","rights":"pdm","status":"completed","search_hidden":"","download_large":"ddr-densho-67-1-mezzanine-669b4d2adf-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-pc-53-5","model":"entity","index":"4 154/{'value': 209, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-pc-53-5/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-pc-53-5/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-pc-53/ddr-pc-53-5-mezzanine-42f6cd8557-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-pc-53/ddr-pc-53-5-mezzanine-42f6cd8557-a.jpg"},"title":"Pacific Citizen, Whole No. 2124, Vol. 92, No. 5 (February 6, 1981)","description":"Selected article titles: \"Reagan team challenges U.S. job action for Blacks, Hispanics\" (p. 1), \"Redress commission expanded to nine\" (p. 1), \"Japan firm in U.S. sued for sex bias in hiring\" (p. 1), \"The Medical Consequences of Nuclear War\" (p. 1), \"New Nikkei-backed bank in L.A. opens\" (p. 2), \"How Hawaii's Sansei view Los Angeles\" (p. 3), \"'Plantation' Mentality?\" (p. 5), \"Being a Black-Japanese American is unique...\" (p. 6), \"24,000 'shosha' children in U.S. 'more American'\" (p. 6), \"'What am I getting for my membership?'\" (p. 10), \"JACL membership slips 3% to 29,000\" (p. 11).","extent":"11W x 14.75H","links_children":"ddr-pc-53-5","creators":[{"role":"publisher","namepart":"Japanese American Citizens League"}],"format":"doc","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Pacific Citizen","rights":"cc","genre":"periodical","location":"Los Angeles, California","creation":"February 6, 1981","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Japanese American Citizens League publisher","download_large":"ddr-pc-53-5-mezzanine-42f6cd8557-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-10-9","model":"entity","index":"5 155/{'value': 209, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-10-9/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-10-9/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-10/ddr-densho-10-9-mezzanine-18336bc6a6-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-10/ddr-densho-10-9-mezzanine-18336bc6a6-a.jpg"},"title":"Cake celebrating the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988","description":"The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 was passed on August 10, 1988. The interviews therefore focused primarily on a single topic, namely, the narrator's role in the redress movement.)","extent":"00:52:56","links_children":"ddr-densho-1000-44","creators":[{"role":"narrator","oh_id":50,"namepart":"William Marutani"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Becky Fukuda"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Gary Kawaguchi"},{"role":"videographer","namepart":"Matt Emery"}],"format":"vh","language":["eng"],"persons":[{"nr_id":"88922/nr015zq9m","namepart":"Marutani, William Masaharu"}],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"interview","location":"University of CA, Los Angeles","creation":"September 11, 1997","status":"completed","search_hidden":"William Marutani narrator \nBecky Fukuda interviewer \nGary Kawaguchi interviewer \nMatt Emery videographer Marutani, William Masaharu 88922nr015zq9m","download_large":"denshovh-mwilliam-01-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-1024-105","model":"entity","index":"24 174/{'value': 209, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1024-105/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-1024-105/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-105-mezzanine-dcf3d38ed1-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-105-mezzanine-dcf3d38ed1-a.jpg"},"title":"Speak Out for Justice: August 5, 1981 - Part 3","description":"In a lunch-time rally planned by NCRR, organizations and communities come together in solidarity to speak out in support for Japanese American Redress.\r\n\r\nIntroduction by Miya Iwataki, Co-Founder of NCRR.\r\n\r\nTo commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1981 Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) Los Angeles hearings, Visual Communications and Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) presents SPEAK OUT FOR JUSTICE, the entire gavel-to-gavel tape coverage of the Los Angeles hearings, held August 4 - 6, 1981.
