Inner note says that the text was also to be published shortly by Little, Brown and Company under the title of Prejudice. The Japanese-Americans: a Symbol of Racial Intolerance. Written in the third year of war after the initial hysteria had somewhat subsided, the text sets out to examine why and how the incarceration occurred, whether it was undertaken out of racial prejudice rather than for the reasons publicly claimed, and what its consequences will be both for the affected populations and more broadly. It offers a brief history of Japanese immigrants in the US, a history of the evacuation and summaries of the camp conditions, the loyalty questionnaire episode, and the aftermath and resettlement efforts (at least as far as 1944, the year of writing). Also explores the so-called \"democratic possibilities\" of the relocation effort, ways that it might be \"justified as an extension of democracy.\" Ends with a list of sources for further reading.","extent":"5.375W x 8.25H (closed); 10.75W x 8.25H (open)","links_children":"ddr-densho-493-36","creators":[{"role":"author","namepart":"McWIlliams, Carey"},{"role":"publisher","namepart":"The Public Affairs Committee, Inc."}],"topics":[{"term":"World War II -- Administration -- War Relocation Authority (WRA)","id":"403"},{"term":"World War II -- Administration -- Registration and the \"loyalty questionnaire\"","id":"85"},{"term":"World War II -- Concentration camps -- Work and jobs","id":"76"},{"term":"World War II -- Military service -- 100th Infantry Battalion","id":"421"},{"term":"World War II -- Mass removal (\"evacuation\")","id":"57"},{"term":"World War II -- Economic losses","id":"59"},{"term":"Race and racism","id":"36"}],"format":"doc","language":["eng"],"persons":[{"namepart":"McWilliams, Carey"},{"namepart":"Coggins, Cecil H."},{"namepart":"Lind, Andrew W."},{"namepart":"Miyamoto, Frank"},{"namepart":"Redfield, Robert"},{"namepart":"Benedict, Ruth"},{"namepart":"Weltfish, Gene"},{"namepart":"Earl, Brown"},{"namepart":"Leighton, George R."},{"namepart":"Cushman, Robert E."},{"namepart":"Roosevelt, Franklin Delano"}],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"pamphlet","location":"New York, New York","creation":"1944","status":"completed","search_hidden":"McWIlliams, Carey author \nThe Public Affairs Committee, Inc. publisher McWilliams, Carey \nCoggins, Cecil H. \nLind, Andrew W. \nMiyamoto, Frank \nRedfield, Robert \nBenedict, Ruth \nWeltfish, Gene \nEarl, Brown \nLeighton, George R. \nCushman, Robert E. \nRoosevelt, Franklin Delano","download_large":"ddr-densho-493-36-mezzanine-0361803fd8-a.jpg"}],"query":{"query":{"query_string":{"query":"Japanese American Committee for Democracy","fields":["id","model","links_html","links_json","links_img","links_thumb","links_children","status","public","title","description","contributor","creators","creators.namepart","facility","format","genre","geography","label","language","creation","location","persons","rights","topics","image_url","display_name","bio","extent","search_hidden"],"analyze_wildcard":false,"allow_leading_wildcard":false,"default_operator":"AND"}},"aggs":{"facility":{"nested":{"path":"facility"},"aggs":{"facility_ids":{"terms":{"field":"facility.id","size":1000}}}},"format":{"terms":{"field":"format"}},"genre":{"terms":{"field":"genre"}},"rights":{"terms":{"field":"rights"}},"topics":{"nested":{"path":"topics"},"aggs":{"topics_ids":{"terms":{"field":"topics.id","size":1000}}}}},"_source":["id","model","links_html","links_json","links_img","links_thumb","links_children","status","public","title","description","contributor","creators","creators.namepart","facility","format","genre","geography","label","language","creation","location","persons","rights","topics","image_url","display_name","bio","extent","search_hidden"]}}
