They are writing in response to a letter by Mrs. Alice Nichols of Seattle, Washington about Dr. Koyama. They state that they have known the Koyamas for 14 years, first meeting them when they were newly married and with a small child. The Goodenoughs mention that Dr. Koyama was still in dental school and that his wife, though Japanese, was very Americanized. Mrs. Nichols was acquaintances with the Koyamas and introduced them to the Goodenoughs shortly after the Koyamas left Seattle for Portland. The letter continues, stating that early on in their relationship with the Koyamas, Mrs. Koyama confessed to a mistake they had made in the past. The Koyamas wanted to make sure that their friendship with the Goodenoughs was a loyal and honest one. The Goodenoughs do not elaborate on the nature of the mistake, stating it was \"not to [sic] serious, certainly not un-American.\" Mrs. Goodenough notes that the Koyamas lived with them for a year and wholly earned their trust and love and came to see the Koyamas as family. Further on, Mrs. Goodenough adds that her husband has been unwell for the last five years and during that time, the Koyamas never once betrayed their trust or took advantage of them. Mrs. Goodenough  feels that Dr. Koyama did nothing to warrant being picked up and that any association he may be part of would not garner government interest if it had been peacetime. Mrs. Goodenough notes that per the morning newspaper, the Examining Board for Dr. Koyama's hearing leaves for Missoula, Montana on January 31st and that a relative or friend may be present. She asks if Dr. Koyama's wife could attend of if she herself could. She states that it would be difficult to leave her husband's side, but she would make the trip on Dr. Koyama's behalf if the board felt it would help his case. She emphasizes her and her husband's status as Americans and complete belief in Dr. Koyama's innocence, but would suspend their efforts on his behalf should he be found guilty. Mrs. Koyama details the efforts she and others have made on behalf of her husband. While her husband was incarcerated at Camp Livingston, Louisiana, Mrs. Koyama submitted numerous documents pertaining to her husband's educational history in the United States. She then found out that the Immigration and Naturalization Bureau did not have these documents and Mrs. Koyama had to turn back to Mrs. A.C. Goodenough to gather them up again. Mrs. Koyama heard from her husband that the Immigration and Naturalization Bureau was able to confirm his status as a legal resident due to a law from 1924. He was also able to track down the whereabouts of the stowaway. His name was Seizaburo Koyama and had returned to Japan several years prior. This was confirmed by the stowaway's brother who happened to be at the same camp as Keizaburo Koyama. After being transferred to Santa Fe, New Mexico, authorities urged Mr. Koyama to fully detail his story, which he did.
