This video includes scenes from the 30-minute drama, and interviews from the companion video on the making of Stand Up for Justice, a film based on the true story of a Mexican American high school student who stood up for his Japanese American friends during WWII—by choosing to live in confinement with them at Manzanar concentration camp.\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Densho Resource Guide at: Stand Up For Justice: The Ralph Lazo Story (film).\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Digital Library of the Japanese American Incarceration Films at: https://archive.org/details/ddr-densho-1024-86.","extent":"00:33:00","links_children":"ddr-densho-1024-86","creators":[{"role":"Director","namepart":"Esaki, John"}],"topics":[{"term":"Identity and values -- Children","id":"509"},{"term":"World War II -- Concentration camps","id":"65"}],"format":"av","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"motion_picture","facility":[{"term":"Manzanar","id":"7"}],"creation":"2004","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Esaki, John Director","download_large":"ddr-densho-1024-86-mezzanine-f254c133eb-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-1024-10","model":"entity","index":"22 1947/{'value': 10000, 'relation': 'gte'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1024-10/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-1024-10/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-10-mezzanine-4bae6507c2-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-10-mezzanine-4bae6507c2-a.jpg"},"title":"Putting Them Where They Could Do No Harm","description":"Short film that makes the case for renaming Fletcher Bowron Square in downtown Los Angeles, named after the wartime mayor of Los Angeles who agitated for the removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans. Eschewing narration, the film uses Bowron's wartime radio addresses (voiced by Maciek Kolodziejeczak) as evidence of his anti-Japanese and pro-exclusion stance, juxtaposed with excerpts from Japanese Americans testifying about their wartime experiences in clips from testimony before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians . The film ends with many examples of entities whose names have been changed in recent years due to changing societal attitudes towards race, before calling for the renaming of Fletcher Bowron Square. The title comes from one of Bowron's radio addresses.\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Densho Resource Guide at: Putting Them Where They Could Do No Harm.\r\n\r\nSee this item in the Digital Library of the Japanese American Incarceration Films at: https://archive.org/details/ddr-densho-1024-10.","extent":"00:07:10","links_children":"ddr-densho-1024-10","creators":[{"role":"filmmaker","namepart":"Nagano, Stephen"}],"topics":[{"term":"Geographic communities -- California -- Los Angeles","id":"272"},{"term":"Redress and reparations -- Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC)","id":"392"}],"format":"av","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"motion_picture","creation":"2021","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Nagano, Stephen filmmaker","download_large":"ddr-densho-1024-10-mezzanine-4bae6507c2-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-1024-61","model":"entity","index":"23 1948/{'value': 10000, 'relation': 'gte'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-1024-61/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-1024-61/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-61-mezzanine-6998b82ca2-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-1024/ddr-densho-1024-61-mezzanine-6998b82ca2-a.jpg"},"title":"Tanforan: From Race Track to Assembly Center","description":"Documentary film on Tanforan , a former horse racing track that became the site of a wartime \" assembly center \" for incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II. He was interviewed individually on November 14, 2002.

Before being contacted by Densho, the Yasutake siblings had planned to conduct their own family history interviews. Individually and jointly, they and other family members had written and gathered material documenting their family history. They shared much of this with me to assist with research and preparation for the Densho interview. Mitsuye's daughter Jeni had coordinated much of the family history work. Jeni participated as a secondary interviewer during the group sessions, October 8-9, 2002.

The group interview sessions were conducted in Seattle at the home of Tom Ikeda, executive director of Densho. The oldest Yasutake sibling, Reverend Seiichi Michael Yasutake, had passed away less than a year before the Densho interviewing, in December, 2001.
