George Nobuo Naohara details his experience after moving from Idaho to Utah. He was a farm labor for sugar beets farm at Norman Johnson in Utah but was working in a hotel as a dish washer during the winter. He and his friend, Tadashi Sakaida, visited Tadashi's girlfriend, Kimiko Hiratsuka, who resided in Colorado. However Kimiko's parents did not approve their relationship because of the family origins: The Hiratsuka family was originated from a Samurai family while Tadashi was from a peasant family. Tadashi was heartbroken and decided to return to the Manznar camp in California to join his family while George moved to the Jerome camp in Arkansas. Due to the closure of the Jerome camp, George was transferred to Tule Lake in California, with his friend, Atsushi Art Ishida. During his stay in the Tule Lake, Japan surrendered the war. He signed up for the leave for Chicago with Atsushi Art Ishida and found a job at International Harvest Co. which manufactured the parts of farm tractors. This letter is mailed from Fred S. Tange's place where Ayame stays. In the letter, she appreciates the monetary gift from her parents-in-law while she feels ashamed to have them to still worry about her family and regrets not being able to help them. She also writes about the catastrophic conditions in Japan after the war. She has received letters from her husband, Makoto Okine, who is stationed in Japan as a US military soldier, and learned that Japanese civilians are starving after the war. She has learned that U.S. military provides him adequate meals but she plans to ship candies to him. She is also concerns about her sister-in-law, Hatsuno Hotty Okine, who is going to Japan with her husband. She also informs of the address of her parents, the Tanimoto, in Lodi, California. Mr. Korematsu was working as a welder in San Francisco when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After Executive Order 9066 was issued in 1942, he decided to resist the evacuation orders, and was not removed with his family. He was arrested in May of 1942, taken to jail, and eventually transferred to the Tanforan Assembly Center, California, where his family was being held. He legally challenged the constitutionality of Executive Order 9066, and his case made it to the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld the order in 1944. Following World War II, Mr. Korematsu moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he married and raised a family before returning to California. In the early 1980s, his case was reopened after the discovery of a crucial document indicating that in the original 1944 case, the federal government had lied to the high court. The conviction was vacated by U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel in 1983, and in 1998, Mr. Korematsu was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.<p>(Due to technical difficulties and conditions at the time of taping, there is loud background noise in this interview.)","extent":"01:21:43","links_children":"ddr-densho-1000-181","creators":[{"role":"narrator","oh_id":205,"namepart":"Fred Korematsu"},{"role":"narrator","oh_id":206,"namepart":"Kathryn Korematsu"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Lorraine Bannai"},{"role":"interviewer","namepart":"Tetsuden Kashima"},{"role":"videographer","namepart":"Matt Emery"}],"format":"vh","language":["eng"],"persons":[{"nr_id":"88922/nr008bb3x","namepart":"Korematsu, Fred Toyosaburo"}],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"cc","genre":"interview","location":"Seattle, Washington","creation":"May 14, 1996","status":"completed","search_hidden":"Fred Korematsu narrator \nKathryn Korematsu narrator \nLorraine Bannai interviewer \nTetsuden Kashima interviewer \nMatt Emery videographer Korematsu, Fred Toyosaburo 88922nr008bb3x","download_large":"denshovh-kfred_g-01-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-densho-97-207","model":"entity","index":"17 8017/{'value': 10000, 'relation': 'gte'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-densho-97-207/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-densho-97-207/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-densho-97/ddr-densho-97-207-mezzanine-77681d2734-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-densho-97/ddr-densho-97-207-mezzanine-77681d2734-a.jpg"},"title":"Heart Mountain Sentinel Vol. III No. 47 (November 18, 1944)","description":"Selected article titles: \"Barber Sabotages Democracy\" (p. 1), \"$50,000 Tract Goes to State in California Property Suit\" (p. 1), \"Center-wide Baby Show Slated for Next Week\" (p. 3), \"Editorial: The Price of Admission\" (p. 4), \"West Coast Return; Freedom of Movement Urged for Nisei\" (p. 5), \"'Distinguish Enemy, U.S. Japanese,' Declares Fistere\" (p. 5), \"Nisei Return Draws Protest\" (p. 8).","extent":"1320W x 1920H (pixels)","links_children":"ddr-densho-97-207","topics":[{"term":"World War II -- Concentration camps -- Publications -- Heart Mountain Sentinel","id":"175"}],"format":"doc","language":["eng","jpn"],"contributor":"Densho","rights":"pdm","genre":"periodical","location":"Heart Mountain concentration camp, Wyoming","facility":[{"term":"Heart Mountain","id":"5"}],"creation":"November 18, 1944","status":"completed","search_hidden":"","download_large":"ddr-densho-97-207-mezzanine-77681d2734-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-pc-16-47","model":"entity","index":"18 8018/{'value': 10000, 'relation': 'gte'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-pc-16-47/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-pc-16-47/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-pc-16/ddr-pc-16-47-mezzanine-294058c877-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-pc-16/ddr-pc-16-47-mezzanine-294058c877-a.jpg"},"title":"The Pacific Citizen, Vol. 19 No. 20 (November 18, 1944)","description":"Selected article titles: \"California State Guard Chief Says Returning Evacuees Will Be Protected from Violence\" (p. 1), \"Japanese American Combat Team Attached to Famous Texas Division in France\" (p. 20, \"Wounded Nisei War Veteran Ejected from Barber Shop\" (p. 2), \"Nisei Who Urged Volunteering for Army Killed in Action\" (p. 3), \"JACL to Hold Conference on Nisei Future\" (p. 8).","extent":"Pacific Citizen","links_children":"ddr-pc-16-47","creators":[{"role":"publisher","namepart":"The Japanese American Citizens League"}],"format":"doc","language":["eng"],"contributor":"Pacific Citizen","rights":"cc","genre":"periodical","location":"Salt Lake City, Utah","creation":"November 18, 1944","status":"completed","search_hidden":"The Japanese American Citizens League publisher","download_large":"ddr-pc-16-47-mezzanine-294058c877-a.jpg"},{"id":"ddr-pc-17-51","model":"entity","index":"19 8019/{'value': 10000, 'relation': 'gte'}","links":{"html":"https://ddr.densho.org/ddr-pc-17-51/","json":"https://ddr.densho.org/api/0.2/ddr-pc-17-51/","img":"https://ddr.densho.org/media/ddr-pc-17/ddr-pc-17-51-mezzanine-d79fcdd806-a.jpg","thumb":"http://ddrmedia.local/media/ddr-pc-17/ddr-pc-17-51-mezzanine-d79fcdd806-a.jpg"},"title":"The Pacific Citizen, Vol. 21 No. 25 (December 22, 1945)","description":"Selected article titles: \"WRA Will Assist Returned Evacuees to Find Permanent Location on Pacific Coast\" (p. 3), \"California Attorney General Says Sheriff Attempted to Prevent Evacuee Employment\" (p. 3), \"Rehearings May Be Held for Tule Lake Group\" (p. 3), \"The Future of the Nisei is His Own by Dillon S.
